Summery of Story

The Gift of the Magi is a story about a young married couple who are selflessly in love with each other. The story opens with the sobbing of Della, the leading lady who lives with her husband, James in a modest flat. When they first moved in Jim was earning more money, but the couples has fallen on hard times. Della has been saved only one dollar and eighty-seven cents after buying groceries. She is crying because she hasn't been able to collect enough money to buy a Christmas present for her husband. And the next day would be Christmas.

Della finished her cry and attended to her cheeks with the powder rag. She stood by the window and looked out the window in deeply mind thoughts. There was a pier-glass between the windows of the room. Suddenly she whirled from the window and stood before the glass. Della has beautiful long hair. She puts her old jacket and hat and she fluttered out the door and down the stairs to the street. Suddenly she stopped the sign read : "Mne. So  Fronie.  Hair Goods of All Kinds." Della got the twenty dollars by sold her hair. After that She was ransacking the stores for Jim's present. Della buys a platinum fob chain for his gold watch which has been passed down through his family. Then Della goes home her intoxication gave a way a little to prudence and reason.

When Della gets home, she looked at her reflection in the mirror long, carefully and critically. Then she heard his step on the stair away down on the first flight and she whispered :"please God, make him think I am still pretty." When Jim sees Della has cut her hair and he gets an expression that Della couldn't read and terrified her. Della wriggled off the table and went for him and explains that why she sold her hair. In response, Jim hugs her and tells her he loves her no matter what her hair looks like. Then he gives her a Christmas present : a set of combs made of pure tortoise shell and adorned with jewelled rims. It is too late when they both realise that they have given away their most prized possessions and bought gifts that are no longer of any use to either of them. Of all who gives and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. They are the Magi.
